GMG Radio Appoints Group MDs Following Expansion

Real Radio Scotland’s Managing Director Billy Anderson has been handed increased responsibility for GMG Radio’s portfolio of stations north of the border.

Following the group’s acquisition of Saga and subsequent relaunch to Smooth Radio and its purchase of Q96 and rebrand to Rock Radio, Billy, who was previously Group Sales Director for business publisher Carnyx before joining Real Radio as Sales Director in 2002, will now become Managing Director of GMG Radio (Scotland).

The growth of GMG Radio in recent months – from five to eleven stations – has seen the group increase the duties of Roy Bennett in the North West of England. Roy, who has been Managing Director of Smooth in the region will now also take on the joint role of MD for Century FM and become GMG Radio Managing Director (North West).

GMG Radio has also appointed two new Managing Directors to Real Radio in Yorkshire and Century FM in the North East of England. Steve South, who was recently Sales Director of Real Radio has been promoted to the role of Managing Director of the station. At the same time Debbie Bowman has been promoted to the role of MD of Century FM in the North East of England. Debbie joined the station as Head of Sales in 2001 from her position as Sales Manager for EMAP Radio’s portfolio of stations in the North East.

GMG Radio Group Operations Director Shaun Bowron said: “As our radio division grows it makes sense to appoint MDs who work across a portfolio of stations. We believe in putting a proper management structure in each of our stations and this in turn has delivered excellent results. Therefore these new appointments will ensure that our stations continue on their current paths to outperform the markets they serve.”
